Sweden national team coach firmly supports out of form Arsenal striker
At the beginning of the June transfer window, Arsenal sporting sector and coach Mikel Arteta took a long look at all available strikers on the market. One option was Benjamin Sesko, the other was Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners decided on the Swedish attacker and he moved from Sporting for 64 million pounds. Sesko also ended up in England, but in Manchester United, and so far they are not shining in their new clubs. The Swede started well with three goals in his first four matches but that was it. Since than, he played in six matches in all competition (started in five) and had zero impact: no goals, no assists. Even Gabriel Martinelli, who is not a starter this season managed the same amount of goals, as much as Bukayo Saka, who missed games due to injury, while defensive midfielder Zubimendi scored just one goal less than Gyokeres.
Still, the players international coach believes in him and has no nice words to his critiques.
“Viktor Gyokeres is in very good form at the moment and is very good. If people say he doesn't have an impact on matches, then they don't understand football and don't have a clue about football. He creates space for other players, works on the ball and makes runs” said Sweden national team coach.
Jon Dahl Tomasson made his playing career all over the world and played as a striker in the Premier League in Newcastle (35 appearances, four goals, three assists). He lasted only one season with the Magpies before being shipped back to Holland to Feyenoord. So apart from being supportive to his important striker, the Sweden boss also understands that a player needs time in the new club.
“It's excellent and he scores goals almost all the time, so he has an impact and has been very good. It's always nice, as you need time when you come to a new club” he said.
