Guirassy & BVB boss bury the hatchet: 'He's our most important striker'

Reading Time: 2min | Tue. 02.12.25. | 17:45

The Guinean reacted angrily to being subbed off against Leverkusen three days ago, and after reconciling with the coach Niko Kovac, he is expected in the XI against the same rival today in the German Cup

Serhou Guirassy hasn't scored in the Bundesliga in over a month, and it's something he hasn't been accustomed to. Hence, his angry reaction to being subbed off at the hour mark of the league clash against Bayer Leverkusen isn't surprising.

Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac reacted calmly to avoid the eventual escalation and did well, as he and the striker soon buried the hatchet.

"I understand that a player doesn't always necessarily want to come off. But Serhou and I are very close. Everything's fine again. We sorted it out after the game. I know that emotions are running high, that adrenaline is involved," the Croat said via Kicker.

The Guinean netted just once in his last eight Bundesliga appearances, which has undoubtedly caused him distress. Yet, the BVB strategist knows exactly what the striker needs.

"I supported him and will continue to support him; he's our most important striker. I know how important he is to us, but I think he also knows how important I am to him," Kovac stated.

Guirassy will have a new chance to find the net and end his goal drought tonight against Lever again, as Dortmund will tonight (23.00) play Kasper Hjulmand's crew for the second time in four days, this time in the German Cup Round of 16. Last Saturday, the BVB triumphed 2-1 behind Aaron Anselmino and Karim Adeyemi's goals, while Christian Kofane scored a consolation goal for Lever.

Considering Bayern Munich's Bundesliga dominance, the Cup may be Borussia's only chance for a trophy this season, so Kovac is expected to send the most potent starting lineup to the pitch, including Guirassy as the leader of the attack.
