Guess who never lost in Newcastle

Manchester City are travelling to the Northeast of England in top form

In every league in every club, there is one manager who has better results against one team then against the others. And there is a manager who just cannot win against his counterpart for months, or years, or never. For example, Bournemouth is playing really well if not excellent this season, and last year was great as well. And the vast majority of that success goes to Andoni Iraola. The Spanish tactician secured a win against almost every club in the league but when he comes across Unai Emery, the win is just impossible. The same goes for Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe.

The English manager did wonders with Newcastle since taking over and even led them to Cup glory after 70 years, winning against Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, but not Manchester City. To be fair, he managed a victory in the Carabao Cup (September 2023, 1-0), but in the Premier League he is painfully winless with two draws and 16 defeats against Guardiola! What is worse, Newcastle as a club is winless in the league against the Citizens in the last 35 games, with 26 of them being defeats! Toon Army remembers that the last win over City came in 2019, under Rafa Benitez.

What is worse is that Guardiola‘s men were a bit shaky at the start of the season (two defeats in the first three games) but have picked up form since and are coming to St. James Park with only one defeat in the last 14 games in all competition. What is even better for City is that fact that since Arsenal dropped points, they managed to crawl back to the second place with only four points less that the Gunners. With a win in Newcastle, they could be just one point below Arteta‘s men who are playing a big derby with Tottenham on Sunday. It‘s no wonder that Guardiola thinks this is the real beginning of the season and not September.

The season starts today. The June transfer window and the three international breaks are behind us, now we have no international breaks until March. So now the season really starts. We are in November, and in November in this league, nothing is final. What happens in February or March, be careful. We have to be there in March. Winning in Newcastle would be an important step for us" said the Spaniard.
