The young keeper is eager to start in all the remaining matches of the season
Gor Mahia have already won the league with three matches to go before the end of the season, courtesy of their 3-0 win over Muhoroni Youth on May 19.
Apart from bagging their 21st league title, Gor Mahia custodian Kevin Omondi also won the golden glove during the same match, keeping his 19th clean sheet of the season, six more than Patrick Matasi of Kenya Police FC.
Caleb Otieno, the reserve goalkeeper for Gor Mahia, is eager to impress the coach and earn a spot as the team's preferred goalkeeper at the end of the league.
He is a graduate of Gor Mahia Youth who impressed with his performance and earned a promotion to the senior team.
Since his introduction to the senior team, Otieno has been an understudy of many goalkeepers at the club, but he has again been impressive when called upon to help the team. With the team's pressure at its lowest and the all-important trophy already won, Otieno hopes to get a chance and earn some more playing time.
"I am working hard, just like I have been doing throughout the season. Now that we've won the league and secured the golden glove, I fervently hope to secure some playing time. This will help in boosting my confidence as well as learning and getting some minutes for myself." He told Mozzart Sport,
Caleb has played four matches so far this season and has lost none of them. He participated in Gor Mahia's season-opening match against Sofapaka, but did not see any league action until regular time. Following Kevin Omondi's red card in the Mashemeji derby, he entered the game. He then played subsequent matches against Muranga Seals and Shabana FC.
"All those matches were challenging and resembled derbies, especially the first one. I am glad that I was able to help the team when Omondi was away and make an impact," says Otieno.
Moving forward, Otieno is determined to compete for the starting line-up role in the upcoming season.
"I feel like I am now ready to compete and fight for my place in the team after being an understudy of other good goalkeepers in the club, such as Boniface Oluoch and Fredrick Odhiambo. I gained insight into their training methods and self-management, and I also received valuable advice from them. Now, I believe it's time for me to showcase my skills and abilities."
Gor Mahia will take on Sofapaka on June 16th, face Talanta three days later, and finally play a league game against Bidco United.
