The two sides met in an FKF Premier League match played on Tuesday, 6 January at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, with Gor Mahia claiming an emphatic 4-1 victory.
First-half goals from Ben Stanley Omondi and Ebenezer Adukwaw, and two in the second half by substitutes Samuel Kapen and Felix Oluoch were all that K’Ogalo needed to secure three points, while Sharks’ consolation was netted by Humphrey Aroko.
Speaking to the press after the match, Akonnor revealed the tactical tweaks that worked to K’Ogalo’s advantage.
“We made some changes to the starting eleven, which I believe paid off as we got some fresh legs and a different dimension that our opponents were not anticipating,” said Akonnor.
“We also made critical substitutions, which I am glad worked. Sharks were the better side for some part of the second half, but our substitutes helped to stabilise the team with Kapen (Samuel) and Felix (Oluoch) scoring to kill off the game,” he added.
Akonnor was forced into a half-time substitution when Ebenezer was injured and was replaced by Oluoch. The Ghanaian later made a triple substitution in the 73rd minute, bringing in Paul Ochuoga, Fidel Origa and George Amonno for Philemon Otieno, Alpha Onyango and Shariff Musa.
“We have not been good in the second half in our previous matches, and so I thought making those substitutions would help the team, and I am glad they did,” noted Akonnor.
The former Ghana head coach also took time to appreciate long-serving team captain Philemon Otieno, who made his first start of the season.

“I am so happy with Philemon, who had his first start and had a good game. He has been a loyal servant of this team and deserves all the good things,” he remarked.
Gor Mahia, who shot to the summit of the league table, will face Shabana FC in their next league match on Sunday, 11 January.
