May his soul rest in peace

Former Zimbabwe international goalkeeper George Chigova passed away at the age of 32 due to a heart ailment. Chigova, known for his stints at Dynamos, Polokwane City, and SuperSport United, suffered a heart attack during training earlier this year, which tragically led to his absence from the field until his untimely death.

He was not well for a while after he was diagnosed with heart issues in July, and he had not played for the club since. Chigova's passing was announced shortly before Zimbabwe's World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, prompting the Warriors players to honour both Chigova and Rahman Gumbo, who recently passed away. Chigova reportedly collapsed and passed away at his residence in South Africa, leaving the football community mourning the loss of a talented player.

Zimbabwe Football Association also sent their condolences in a statement.

"Chigova played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe football, representing the Warriors with distinction at various international tournaments, including the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. His sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of football fans and the Zimbabwean sporting community. We extend our condolences to Chigova's family, friends and teammates during this difficult time. His contributions to Zimbabwe football will not be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace."

Chigova emerged from the Aces Youth Soccer Academy in Harare, a nurturing ground for notable talents like Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat. He will be remembered for his remarkable penalty saves during the 2018 COSAFA Cup quarter-final, where his standout performance helped the Warriors secure a semi-final spot with a 4-1 victory in the penalty shootout against hosts South Africa, following a tense 1-1 draw in regular time. His contributions to Zimbabwean football and those unforgettable saves will be cherished as part of his enduring legacy in the sport.
