Gomez: It is an honor to wear the same shirt Maradona wore

Papu Gomez was officially presented at Sevilla as a new signing and at his promotion in the Spanish club, the Argentine did not hide his satisfaction with coming to Andalusia. A midfielder who, after arriving from Atalanta, signed a contract until June 2024 and completed the quartet with compatriots Lucas Ocampos, Franco Vasquez and Marcos Acuna.

The Spanish club set aside 6.7 million USD (738 million KSH) for the transfer of Gomez, while Atalanta will also receive bonuses of a maximum of 3 million USD (330 million KSH).

"Everything was quite a surprise. For me, coming to a great club like Sevilla is a big challenge. This is a step that completely changes my life. I arrived in another country, but I am very happy and excited" said the midfielder.

During the promotion of the Argentine, it was inevitable to ask him about his most famous compatriot who wore a red and white jersey, Diego Armando Maradona, who in 1992 wore the club's jersey for one season.

"This club has a very nice history with many Argentines that have gone through it. Each has left their mark and I hope it is my turn to contribute a little to the club's history. Maradona has played here and the Argentines are proud to be able to wear the jersey in which Diego also played."

Gomez then pointed out the influence of Pablo Aimar in his football maturation.

"When he played at River, I was 12. I tried to imitate him, him, D'Alessandro, Saviola, Ortega ... All of them."

Although he already stepped into the fourth decade of his life, the 32-year-old football player had lucrative offers from the East, but money was not the deciding factor.

"Honestly, finances have never been a priority for me. I had offers to move from Atalanta to Arab teams, but my priority has always been the football part. There is time for the rest and I think I am in a very good moment, I am in a mature phase of my career and life. I wanted to continue playing at a competitive level, given that I am on the national team also.
