Gift? Of course - Liverpool continues with unbeaten streak

Reading Time: 4min | Sun. 14.09.25. | 18:04

Current English champions struggled all game, even with an extra man, but a penalty gifted by Burnley players sealed a 1-0 win for Liverpool

From the very first minute, it was clear Liverpool wouldn’t have it easy at Turf Moor. The first half was poor, the second slightly better, and aided by a red card and a penalty, the Reds ultimately secured an away victory.

The first half at Turf Moor ended goalless, though both sides created some promising moments. Liverpool made the first move in the 5th minute when Cody Gakpo tried his luck from the edge of the box, but his effort flew harmlessly over the bar. Burnley responded quickly: in the 7th minute, a well-worked counter-attack ended with Anthony striking from around 18 meters, just over the crossbar.

Liverpool came close again in the 12th minute as Ibrahima Konate rose to meet a corner, but his header also sailed high. Tensions flared midway through the half—Milos Kerkez was shown a yellow card in the 22nd minute for blatant simulation inside Burnley’s area, a decision that left Arne Slot visibly displeased. The Dutch coach acted later in the 38th minute, replacing Kerkez with Andy Robertson.

Before that, Dominik Szoboszlai had unleashed a powerful strike from distance in the 31st minute after a loose ball fell to him, though his shot went over. Robertson almost made an instant impact after coming on—driving through the middle and testing Dubravka in the 39th minute—but his attempt lacked power and was comfortably saved.

The second half opened brightly, with Liverpool pushing for a breakthrough. Just three minutes after the restart, the ball bounced around the Burnley penalty area before falling to Ryan Gravenberch, who struck a volley just over the bar. Moments later, Conor Bradley got on the end of a cross with a header, but he too failed to hit the target.

Burnley had a scare in the 55th minute when Florian Wirtz danced his way into the box and unleashed a shot, only to miss the far post by inches. Four minutes later came Liverpool’s best chance of the match: Dominik Szoboszlai unleashed a thunderous strike from 30 meters, forcing Dubravka into a stunning reflex save to keep the score level.

Liverpool kept creating, but the finishing touch eluded them. In the 73rd minute, Federico Chiesa met a cross from close range but mistimed his header, sending it wide of the right post. Just two minutes later, Szoboszlai once again went close after a clever turn on the edge of the box, firing narrowly wide.

In the 85th minute, Liverpool seemed to get a final push to attack Burnley’s goal. On the edge of the box, Ugochukwu fouled Wirtz, which earned him a second yellow card of the match, leaving the home side with ten men just five or six minutes before the end of regular time.

The truth is that the Burnley player had already deserved this card in the first half, when he committed a harsh foul on Mac Allister, but it was not punished with the strictest sanction.

In the 90+3rd minute, just when everyone thought it was over, Liverpool were awarded a penalty. Frimpong sent a ball into the box, Hannibal stretched out his arm, and Michael Oliver immediately pointed to the spot. Salah was flawless from twelve yards, securing victory for Liverpool in the dying seconds. The goal is HERE!
