Long-serving Zoo midfielder confident of promotion at the end of the season

Experienced Zoo FC midfielder and club captain Geoffrey Gichana has predicted a quick return to top flight football even as they gear up for their second stint in the National Super League. Zoo were dropped to the second tier by FIFA in May for alleged match fixing that saw barred from competing from the last season’s top flight competition.

Their ouster from the senior level midway the competition was initially thought that it will pave way for their best players to leave but the club has managed to hold on its valued assets that were under watch from deep pocketed teams. Zoo have only parted company with Tayo Odongo and Collins Neto who joined Tanzanian Premier League side Biashara United and Bidco United respectively.

Gichana says that the team that boasts of seasoned players had been training as a unit for long thus, are fit enough to navigate through the murky second tier waters.

The defensive midfielder who is among the pioneers of the club said that the technical bench had also captured exciting talents who have been integrated in the team and understand their style of play.

We will not stay in the second tier for more than a season. We did not lose players apart from the two whom I feel we have found good replacements for them. I would have been worried if we were heading back to the NSL with a new team and a new technical bench. The players know what it means to have a team in the top flight in this region and have to do their best to recapture our status amongst the big boys,” he said.

Gichana is on record stating that he will retire at the club and venture into coaching later. Zoo will host former top flight side Kisumu All Stars in their first match of the season. Zoo will be joined by Vihiga United and Kisumu United who were dropped to the NSL for poor performance.
