The Ballon d'Or gala happened two months ago. But, hey, the Real Madrid president is still fuming...
Real Madrid is probably the biggest club in the world, but some of their latest moves and behaviour are so unappropriate. Like today's speech of the club's president Florentino Perez at the General Assembly, where he addressed the matter of Ballon d'Or award publicly.
Perez, just like his golden boy, can't get over the fact that Vinicius Junior didn't win it, but Manchester City's Rodri.
"The Ballon d'Or is an event that UEFA organised for the first time in history with France Football. I want to say Rodri is a great footballer and, he is from Madrid, he has our affection. He deserved a Ballon d'Or, but not this year, but last year. This one was for a Real Madrid player. The clamour was for Vinicius, but it could have been for our captain, Carvajal. Or even Bellingham. It's very difficult to explain."
At the mentioned event, the Madrid president also said:
"If the journalists from Namibia, Uganda, Albania and Finland had not voted, Vinicius would be the Ballon d'Or [winner]. These countries did not give Vinicius a single vote. Not one! The Finn, at least, has resigned. He has also said that he will not be part of the jury again. Look, I appreciate it.
"The Ballon d'Or must be organised independently and the votes for this award must be in the hands of people of recognised prestige, the coaches, so that everyone understands that their reputation is also at stake with their vote. We do not know who voted for them from countries we do not know. For all these reasons, Real Madrid considered it appropriate not to attend this edition of the Ballon d'Or gala."
