Gavi cleared for comeback: Barca's midfield gets its missing piece back

After six months on the sidelines following knee surgery, the 21-year-old is ready to return against Sevilla this Sunday (6.15 pm)

Barcelona have received a major boost ahead of Sunday's La Liga clash with Sevilla - Gavi is set to return to the squad. The beloved midfielder, sidelined since mid-August for knee surgery, could feature at Camp Nou (6.15 pm).

Gavi's absence followed the first two matches of the season against Mallorca and Levante, after which it was confirmed he needed surgery on the same knee that suffered the infamous ACL injury in 2023. Initially expected back in February, Barcelona took extra care to ensure no setbacks.

Now, the 21-year-old has been medically cleared, giving Hansi Flick fresh options in a midfield currently stretched to the limit. Frenkie de Jong remains out injured, while Pedri and Marc Bernal have been running on fumes due to heavy match schedules.

Flick, however, is in no rush to throw Gavi straight into the starting XI. As with Bernal earlier in the season, the plan is a gradual reintegration to minimise risk and protect Barcelona's vital number six.

Whether Gavi will feature on Sunday may depend on how the match unfolds - a tight encounter could see him remain on the bench, as caution continues to guide his return.
