The side finished second in the just-concluded season behind Vihiga Queens despite having a promising run that had them in contention for the title until the business end of the campaign
Kenya Women’s Premier League (WPL) runners-up Gaspo Women will, on Wednesday 7 June kick start a three-month pre-season program that is meant to prepare the side for a title campaign in the 2023/24 season.
Club boss Edward Githua says the team has laid down elaborate plans to prepare their squad as they look to achieve what they have failed at numerous times, but came close in the just concluded season, clinching the league title.
The program starts with a three-day open trial at the Statehouse Grounds starting at 11 am on Wednesday with head coach Jacob ‘ghost’ Mulee taking charge of the search for players that are set to add to the team’s depth.
“The head coach has a detailed strategy for getting us the best players as the team needs a revamp. We are looking to strengthen all the departments but goalkeeping and defense are a top priority.
While experience is a good aspect to consider, we will be going for talent as some of our best players have proven that all they need is an opportunity and good guidance to perform at the highest level, experience notwithstanding,” Githua offered.
Githua says the team lacked depth on defense hence the need for reinforcement but maintains that all the departments will be revamped. The side is looking to make seven additions to their squad of 25.
The side recently announced that they would be playing friendly matches against Tanzanian and Ugandan runners up Simba Queens FC and Kawempe Muslims Ladies FC respectively in the coming days but Githua has revealed that the team will first play a high-altitude match on the slopes of Mt Kenya before the two matches.
“We have held off plans to play a match 3900 above sea level but we have finally settled on 29 and 30 June for the trip to Mt Kenya. We are planning on inviting a few more players for the trip as the match requires more players given the conditions we will be playing under.
When everything is ready, we will make the announcement. We are in consultations with all parties involved including Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) personnel,” Githua explained.
We are open for trials!! Players interested in joining us.

This, the club boss says is part of their boot camp and a plan to promote women’s football by doing something that has not been done before.
As for the trips to Uganda and Tanzania, Githua confirms that the two matches will take place in July and August respectively with dates set to be announced in coming days after all details, including funding, have been agreed on.
More friendly matches are also in the pipeline as the club chairperson says the team is investing heavily in their season as they look to clinch their maiden league title.
