Gang of average goalkeepers; another one joins Manchester United

It’s as if the Red Devils only sign goalkeepers—and none of them have lived up to expectations so far
Emiliano Martinez was certainly the bigger name, but Manchester United chose – Senne Lammers. Earlier in the day, everything was agreed, and the former Antwerp goalkeeper was officially presented as part of the Manchester giants. The new signing cost 21 million euros plus bonuses, and he signed a five-year contract.
Lammers arrived in England, completed his medical checks, and put pen to paper on the five-year deal. Now the only question is whether Lammers is good enough to take the starting spot between the posts at Manchester United, or if fans will have to settle for three fairly average options.

Andre Onana started the season as the first-choice goalkeeper but was dropped after a few major errors. Then Altay Bayindir stepped in, but he didn’t impress either. It looks like Lammers will be Ruben Amorim’s savior in the number one position.
United had also previously extended the contract of 39-year-old Tom Heaton, who is there just in case—but his presence could allow United to consider selling or loaning Onana. That would be a significant loss, as United paid 51 million euros for Onana in 2023. Even if he stays, it’s unclear how much he will play.

Statistics from last season suggest that United fans do have reason to hope. According to the well-known stats agency Opta, Senne Lammers made 173 saves in the Belgian league—20 more than any other goalkeeper in any of Europe’s top 10 leagues.
“I am extremely proud to join Manchester United; this is truly a dream come true. The past few years have been an incredible journey, which has now ended at an amazing destination and, I hope, marks the beginning of something special. You can feel the positive atmosphere being created here, and I know I can make a real impact at the club in the years to come. I can’t wait to meet my teammates and start working with Ruben and the coaching staff. This is the perfect place to continue developing, grow with this exciting team, and achieve my career goals,” Lammers said at his presentation.
