K'Ogalo start their campaign with a clash against Division One side Kibera Soccer

Gor Mahia custodian Gad Mathews opines that playing Mozzart Bet Cup matches against teams from other tiers is tough because of the mindset of the players in those teams.

K'Ogalo are set to begin their title defence with a tie against FKF Division One side Kibera Soccer on Sunday at Kasarani Stadium and the goalkeeper is anticipating a tough encounter.

According to the goalkeeper, teams in the lower division take Cup matches as a platform to parade themselves in front of Premier League coaches and management with an aim of impressing them for possible moves.

"Playing Cup matches is not easy because you come against teams from lower divisions and everybody is coming to prove a point. This is some good exposure to players from those lower tier sides. When they play against teams like Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Tusker, and other topflight teams they get to be seen by coaches from those teams and that could be life-changing for them," Gad said.

Gor are the holders of the title having beat AFC Leopards in the final of the 2021 edition on post-match penalties. However, this season promises only a semifinal clash for the two teams if they both get to that point.

With the competitive nature of the FKFPL this season, Gad insists that they are in the competition to win it to ensure they play at the continental level.

"We are looking forward to retaining it. The league is quite competitive and we do not know what might happen. We have to be cautious to defend the trophy," he added.
