Mathare United have struggled for consistency this season and currently sit 12th on the table with 21 points after 17 rounds, seven points above the relegation zone.

FKF Premier League side Mathare United has confirmed the return of club legend Gabriel “Kingi” Njoroge in a coaching role.

Kingi joins John Kamau’s technical bench as an assistant coach and has already been involved in training sessions at the club’s Goan Institute training ground.

On returning to his boyhood club, the 54-year-old said, “I feel reborn. That is the only way I can describe the feeling of returning to where everything began for me. I am here to help the team and the coach in achieving our full potential, and I know we will succeed,” he told the club’s official website.

Kingi has a long and storied history with Mathare United. He was among the first players who helped form the club in 1994, after years of involvement as a player and coach in the MYSA football system.

After retiring from playing, Kingi took up a role as assistant coach and, under the late Jonathan Niva, guided Mathare to the 1998 Moi Golden Cup title, the club’s first-ever national trophy.

A year later, the UEFA B Licence holder took over as head coach and led the team to the 2000 President’s Cup and the Hedex Millennium Cup.

Kingi held the head coach position for much of the early 2000s, and on three separate occasions, guided Mathare to runners-up finishes in the Premier League. He also led the junior side to two U20 Premier League titles and won a gold medal at the global Norway Cup tournament. His most recent Premier League coaching role was with Murang’a Seal in late 2023.

Mathare United have struggled for consistency this season and currently sit 12th on the table with 21 points after 17 rounds, seven points above the relegation zone. With Kingi’s return, the club hopes his experience will help strengthen the coaching team and improve consistency in performances for the remainder of the campaign.
