Fulham stun Liverpool in injury time

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 04.01.26. | 20:20

After a total turnover, Liverpool allowed an equalizer in injury time

Good news: Liverpool are still unbeaten in nine games in all competition since the 4-1 demolition by PSV in the Champions League. Good news: Florian Wirtz scored for the second time in three games. Bad news: the current champion failed to win for the second time in a row. After a goalless draw with Leeds, Liverpool staged a turnover and took the lead against Fulham in the 94th minute, just to see a stunning equalizer by the home team in the 97th minute. What is worse for the Reds, Fulham are missing three regulars - including the influential Alex Iwobi - due to AFCON, they had injuries in both full-back positions, while Josh King and Rodrigo Muniz were unavailable in attack. To be true, Liverpool were missing both Isak and Ekitike, so Gakpo had to lead the line, but the overall performance is still not good. The Reds are now 14 points away from Arsenal and they are playing in North London against the Gunners on Thursday.

Due to a medical emergency at the ground, kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes and both teams were a bit slow at the start, but Liverpool were still too slow. The current champion played a horrible half, with only one chance, which was not only denied by the post, but was ruled offside. No shots on goal. Fulham were defending and used the only opportunity in the first 45 minutes when former Liverpool’s player Harry Wilson scored in the 15th minute. The goal was initially denied due to an offside but VAR check overturned the decision on the field and the hosts took the lead.

Liverpool started to play meaningfully only in the second half and that’s when they created their first chance of the game, but McAllister’s header shook the bar in the 53rd minute. And then four minutes later Florian Wirtz scored an equalizer which was denied due to an offside, but just like Wilson’s, was allowed after a VAR check. The game was on again. Little by little, Fulham started to create chances and missed the best one of the match, when Alisson made a mistake and Wilson managed to miss the empty goal and hit the bar. The ‘punishment’ came in the 94th minute when Frimpong assisted Gakpo for the lead. But Harrison Reed came in the 92nd minute only to score a creamer from over 20 meters in the 97th minute to get Fulham a well deserved draw.
