From full to minority owner - Jim Ratcliffe changes strategy over United

The Manchester United takeover saga is not ending anytime soon

Back in November 2023, it was announced that Manchester United was up for sale. Hated owners, the Glazer family, were looking to finally sell one of the world's most famous clubs, which they acquired in 2005 for around 790 million pounds. Now, 18 years later, they want six billion pounds for it, and when news broke out, everyone thought that it's a quite large sum and that the family will probably use this figure for negotiations. But, they stayed firm and only Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani came close with a 5 million bid, but the owners never responded (at least publically). So, the takeover story just faded away at one point, and angry fans started to believe that it was just all a charade with no real intention to sell, so they organized protests at the stadium and outside the club shop, but nothing came out of it. And now, of the two remaining (potential) buyers, English billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe is trying one last, desperate move.

According to the media, current Nice owner is will try to buy a minority stake in Manchester United, in order to break the impasse over the ownership situation at Old Trafford. And that option seems like the more realistic one. When the news of a sale broke out in November 2023, the Glazer family said they are 'exploring' option for sale, and Elliott Investment Management, the recent owners of AC Milan decided to use money from the sale of the Italian giant and offer to buy a minority stake. But at the time, everybody thought that the Americans want to sell all shares. Now, it seems that this option is the only real one, especially after it was revealed in US press that the members of the Glazer family, who are all shareholders, cannot agree on the sum. So, Ratcliffe is now considering a different strategy, which could be seen as the best way to secure ownership in the long term. On the other hand, this move would allow the Glazers to keep a significant stake in United, but it will not go down too well with the club's fans.
