Fresh blow for Muhoroni as key defender confirms departure

Barely hours after their relegation to the National Super League, Muhoroni Youth have suffered a fresh blow after their best defender, Alex Onchwari, confirmed his departure from the club. 

Muhoroni joined Nzoia Sugar in bidding top tier football goodbye after playing Posta Rangers to a one-all draw in the final game of the season played on Sunday. 

Before the club could come to terms with the loss of top-flight status, their arguably best player of the season, Onchwari, said goodbye. 

The central defender told Mozzart Sport that his contract with Muhoroni expired on Saturday, and will not renew his stay at the club he served for a season. 

Even before the expiry of his deal, Onchwari seemed to have made up his mind as he missed the final three matches of the season, with speculation rife that he had crossed the border to Tanzania to sign a contract with an unnamed club.

"I am a free agent after running out of contract on Saturday. I have enjoyed my time at Muhoroni, although it's disappointing to see the team go down," he revealed. 

Sources close to the player indicate that former champions Tusker are at the forefront of the race for Onchwari's signature. 

Additionally, Shabana are said to be interested in his services, although the player remained tight-lipped about the teams chasing his signature.

Onchwari trained with Tusker for a while last year but didn't land a deal with the brewers. 

"Several clubs have reached out, but nothing has been agreed on. Last year, I put pen to paper in the final days of the transfer window, and I wouldn't like a repeat of the same. I hope to settle early and focus on the new season," added the former Zoo FC defender. 

Besides Onchwari, Muhoroni are likely to lose more players when the off-season transfer window opens.
