The Brewers made a bright start and took the lead through Erick Kapaito, who reacted quickest to slot home a rebound after Ulinzi goalkeeper Sylvaine Ricks had parried an initial effort from Yakeen Muteheli.
The early breakthrough gave Tusker control, but Ulinzi Stars responded well as the half progressed.
Staphod Odhiambo restored parity for the hosts before the break, ensuring the sides went into halftime level in what was shaping up to be a balanced encounter.
In the second half, both teams pushed for a decisive goal, but it was Tusker who found the breakthrough late on. Tanzania international Ibrahim Joshua proved the difference-maker, finishing off a well-worked solo move initiated by Ian Simiyu to seal victory for the visitors.
The win continues Tusker’s impressive cup run, having previously eliminated Kariobangi Sharks (1-0), Bidco United (2-0), and Mwea United (3-2) in earlier rounds.
Speaking after the match, Tusker head coach Julien Mette hailed the result as a significant step forward for his team’s mentality.
“It’s a very important victory, especially now that we have qualified. We scored, but we conceded. When I came here, players were low mentally, and now that we have managed to come back means the players have improved mentally,” said Mette.
The coach also shifted focus to their league ambitions, emphasising the need for consistency.
“We want to be in the top four. As far as the history of the club, position 8 is not good. I will put pressure on the players to continue winning,” he added.
Mette further hinted at squad rotation in upcoming fixtures to maintain momentum.
Match-winner Joshua credited teamwork and faith for the victory.
“We have done a good job, and it hasn’t been easy. I attribute the win to God. It’s all Him, and as a striker, it’s my job to score goals,” he said.
