Zizou's return feels inevitable. The only question left is how soon
Four and a half years. That's how long it's been since Zinedine Zidane last stood on the touchline - since his second spell at Real Madrid ended in May 2021.
One league title, one Super Cup, and a quiet farewell that felt almost too small for the man who once conquered all of Europe.
Since then, Zizou's name has floated around every major dugout in Europe (Juventus, Manchester United, Bayern Munich). Always the same rumour, always the same silence. Until now.
Appearing at a charity match in Cannes, Zidane smiled when asked about his coaching future.
"I'll be managing one of the teams tonight," he joked, then paused, and with a more serious tone, added a single word that set France ablaze:
"Soon."
That one word was enough to light the fuse. Across France, from L'Equipe to RMC Sport, the message was clear: Zidane is coming back.
The question, as always, is where? While club options remain open, all signs point toward Les Bleus. The idea of Zizou succeeding Didier Deschamps as France's next head coach has never felt more real.
Current reports suggest Deschamps will step down after the 2026 World Cup, ending a 14-year reign that brought France a World Cup (2018), a Nations League title (2021), and two more finals - Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup.
When that day comes, France already knows its natural heir. The man who led them as captain, inspired them as icon, and now seems ready to guide them once more - this time from the bench.
