Celtic shareholder released a scanning statement after Rodgers' exit

A storm is shaking Scottish football! In the span of just a few days, both of the country’s biggest clubs – Celtic and Rangers – have been left without their managers. Brendan Rodgers has resigned from the “green and white” bench, while Rangers have sacked their coach after a string of disappointing results. Celtic confirmed on Monday that Rodgers is no longer head coach. The club issued a short statement thanking the former manager for everything he achieved during his two successful spells with the team (from 2016 to 2019 and from 2023 to 2025). His successor is already known – the legendary Martin O’Neill returns to “Celtic Park” as interim manager, sparking a wave of nostalgia among fans.

Rodgers’ departure did not come out of the blue. Poor results, an early exit from Champions League qualifiers, and a defeat to Hearts (1–3) dealt a serious blow to his position. On top of that, growing fan dissatisfaction and conflicts with the board over transfer policy made his departure inevitable. But apart from the polite statement where the club thanks his already former manager, the major shareholder Dermot Desmond made a stunning attack on former Liverpool boss.

His words and actions since then a recent meeting have been divisive, misleading, and self-serving. They have contributed to a toxic atmosphere around the club and fuelled hostility towards members of the executive team and the board“ reads the statement.

Just a few days earlier, Rangers had also confirmed that they had parted ways with their manager, who paid the price for a series of bad results and a loss to Hibernian. The club from “Ibrox” has now turned to German coach Danny Rohl to turn the season around. As a result, Glasgow has become the epicenter of football drama – both giants are searching for new leaders at the same time, while the Scottish public eagerly awaits to see which side will first regain stability and authority. At this moment, O’Neill and Rohl will try to bring calm and experience to the ranks of Celtic and Rangers respectively. And while all of Scotland wonders who will recover first, the country might see a new champion for the first time in 65 years – as Hearts currently sit eight points ahead of second-placed Celtic.
