Former Gunner wants to bury the hatchet with the fans

Emmanuel Adebayor enraged Arsenal fans back in 2009 in a 4-2 loss to Manchester City

There were numerous Arsenal players who were bought from 'nowhere' and brought in to the Emirates and gained their popularity because Arsene Wenger saw their potential and gave them the chance to shine in the first team. And later on, many of them switched the red and white colors for some more expensive ones: Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City. Emmanuel Adebayor was one of many players to do that, and one of many who experienced the wrath for loyal Gunners when he played against them. And now, after so many years, he wants a truce.

Back in 2009, Manchester City needed big signings to instantly become big club after an Abu Dhabi owners came in and Adebayor switched Emirates for Etihad for 25 million pounds. When the City-Arsenal game came, he was abused by the Gunners fans so when he scored in a 4-2 win, he ran across the whole field to 'celebrate' the goal in front of them. He was pelted with objects, including a plastic stool, and was handed a £25,000 fine and a suspended two-match ban by the Football Association. And now he thinks fans should forget about the incident.

“I think the fans can forget what happened in 2009 when I ran the length of the pitch. Today I will make it clear, I don't think any human being would accept it if people were singing about and insulting your family, especially your mother and father. I would do anything for my mother and father. It's behind me now, I hope it is behind them. We all love football and every once in a while when they see that celebration on television and social media, hopefully now they can laugh it off and move on. That's what I wish for the Arsenal fans and I wish them the best of luck this year“ he told Sky Sports.

The former Gunner scored 62 goals in 142 matches for Arsenal during his stay at the Emirates between 2006 and 2009, while he played for City only one full season (14 goals), before spending some time on loans to Real Madrid and Tottenham. But he still supports Arsenal and even wanted them to defeat City last season.

“We were all rooting for them to win the league and they came very close. When it reached around January and February, I was telling all my friends, I hope these boys will not start dropping points. This is how it was with me when I was playing for Arsenal. So when they did start dropping points, I said listen to me, I don't know whether there is a curse on the club but it's going to be difficult for them to win the league“ said the Togolese.
