Wesonga believes that Leopards must sign at least five quality players in the mid-season transfer window if they are to win the race for the crown.

“The squad as it is now cannot fight for the title this season. The best they can do is to sign five quality players in January and then start preparing to win the league next season,” he said.

He pointed out to last weekend's 2-0 loss to Mara Sugar FC as one of the clearest indicators of Ingwe's inability to land the title.

Winning the league requires good planning and it starts early, something that Leopards have not done. They should forget about the title this season.”

According to Wesonga, three teams:Gor Mahia, Kenya Police and Nairobi United are favorites to lift the title.

Gor Mahia have a very united squad and are hungry to reclaim the title. This gives them the motivation to go for it,” he said.

Regarding Nairobi United, he points out that the newly-promoted side have tested continental football and therefore, remain highly motivated.

The club has earned millions of shillings from taking part in continental football and this will act as a major motivation to go for the title,” observed Wesonga.

Nairobi United made history by qualifying for the group stages of the Confederations Cup, earning Kshs.51 million in the process.

The club best Gor Mahia 2-1 in the Mozzart Bet Cup Final to seal a place in the continental tournament.

Meanwhile, Wesonga said Kenya Police, the current defending champions, also remain motivated to retain the title despite their slow start.

The last time AFC Leopards won the league was in 1998.
