The Mailmen, who were on their worst run of form this season, made one of their recent efforts stick as they stunned Nicholas Muyoti’s side to pick up a first league win since 8 December last year.
Charles Omondi’s underdogs took the lead in the seventh minute when Jackson Macharia punished some slack defending from the visitors, before second-half substitute Dinken Mwema netted the second in the 78th minute to wrap up the seemingly comfortable victory.
©Gad IsaacHaving come close to shocking Gor Mahia in their last league match, Posta were dealt a huge helping hand in the form of a misfiring Police, as they held on to a first clean sheet since 16 December.
The valuable win took Posta up to 12th with 28 points, while Police, who saw their five-game unbeaten run snapped, remained fifth with 37 points, blowing any hopes of a potential title defense.
Match Report
Given both sides' contrasting run of form, it was easier to lean on the side of Muyoti's resurgent Police gunning down Omondi's free-falling Mailmen, but in hindsight, that is why games are played.
Posta, who last weekend needed the welcome sight of the Mozzart Bet Cup to interrupt their rut, were well on their way to mounting an upset when they once again took an early lead, just like in the Gor Mahia game, when they were unfotunate to end up conceding a late equalizer.
Muyoti will not have enjoyed the sight, as a series of passes from the Police back-line ended up with David Owino coughing up possession to Macharia, who had the easy task of sidefooting the ball into an empty net, with keeper Daniel Ogembo sprawling.
©Gad IsaacIn previous ocassions, a lead meant trouble for Posta, who had the threat of finding ways of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and had not kept a cleansheet in their last nine matches.
As fate would have it however, Police, with the potent Yves Koutiama in their line-up, were not upto their best here, and rarely lay a glove on Bixente Otieno, whose only call to action was to punch away two looping free-kicks from Abud Omar.
Muyoti, in a bid to inject some urgency upront, brought on Ambrose Sifuna and Marvin Nabwire at half time, but it was Posta still, perhaps to his surprise, who went close to nicking a second, this as Brian Marita squeezed past a couple of bodies to shoot straight at Ogembo in the 57th minute.
©Gad IsaacAnother pair of substitutions by Muyoti brought forth Brian Chonjo and Tobias Otieno, but Posta, who were a couple of weeks flagged by their captain for a lack of concentration, stayed alert to avert any danger.
To their reward, a gift of a corner bore the second goal, as Marita found Mwema at the backpost to shoot past the pair of Hernest Malonga and Ogembo, and into the bottom corner.
Signed, sealed and delivered, they would say, even as a chance for Eric Zakayo to grab a consolation in stoppage time was snuffed out.
Form? What form?
