This comes just months after former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech publicly urged the federation’s new leadership to form a board of football legends to help revive the sport in Kenya.
On Friday, 1 August, Oliech and several other former stars saw their calls answered as FKF President Hussein Mohammed announced a set of legacy-driven initiatives aimed at integrating legends into the football ecosystem.
Oliech, Kenya’s all-time top scorer with 34 goals, was also unveiled as the official ambassador for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), cementing his continued role in shaping Kenyan football.
1. Hall of Fame and Archival Recognition
For the first time in the country’s football history, FKF is set to establish a Hall of Fame to honour Kenyan football legends. Hussein noted that the federation will also build a comprehensive archive to document and preserve the contributions of the country’s iconic players.
“We will have an archive and a Hall of Fame for our football legends. This is our way of making sure their efforts are never forgotten,” he uttered.
2. Pension Scheme
Recognising the financial challenges many retired players face, FKF has also pledged to establish a pension plan or cooperative Sacco for former footballers. This initiative aims to provide a safety net as they transition into coaching, mentorship, or other roles within the sport.
Hussein emphasised the importance of helping legends transition into new roles within the football ecosystem.
“We will ensure that they have some sort of pension or a Sacco that will take care of their needs as they transition to other careers within the football ecosystem,” he offered.
3. Gameday privileges
FKF also announced that from the 2025/26 season, all registered former footballers will enjoy free access and VIP seating at FKF Premier League matches.
They will also be allowed to attend games with their families, a move meant to show appreciation for their past service to the game.
“When the new season starts, all the former footballers will get preferential seating, accreditation to attend football games, and you can attend any game with your families without disturbance,” the FKF boss said.
Hussein further reiterated that the world of football extends far beyond playing and coaching, noting that there are more than enough opportunities for the legends.
“The football ecosystem is big. There are plenty of opportunities for you, former footballers, as coaches, assistant coaches, physicians, nutritionists, and more,” he said.
He also lauded those who have remained within the sport in technical and mentorship roles and encouraged others to explore available opportunities.
With Kenya gearing up to host the 2024 CHAN tournament and a new FKF Premier League season on the horizon, the federation’s initiative could mark the beginning of a new era.
