Ulinzi Stars legend Stephen Ocholla can afford a smile after registering his first win since returning to the club last month.

The four-time league champions turned to their former forward after parting ways with Danstun Nyaudo, following a difficult start in the 2025-2026 FKF Premier League champaign.

However, Ocholla did not have a smooth take off, in the early days of his second stint as a manager of the club, as the soldiers continued to fire blanks.

The young manager can finally rest easy after winning his first match, since his reappointment on 29 October, as Ulinzi beat league debutants APS Bomet 1-0 on Wednesday at the Kericho Green Stadium.

Paul Odhiambo was the hero of the match, as his 53rd minute goal sealed the second win of the season for Ulinzi.

The result has now lifted them out of the red zone and into 15th place with nine points.

The clash was a must-win for both sides after poor starts to the campaign.

APS, who earned promotion to the top tier at the end of last season, went into the match searching for a second win that could have pulled them off the bottom of the standings.

The Black Berets have endured a harsh welcome to the top division, losing five of their eight matches and managing only two stalemates.

Before meeting Ulinzi, Bomet had gone three games without a win, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz before successive draws against Bidco United and Mathare United.

Now under the interim stewardship of Benedict Wanajala, they remain rooted at the bottom of the 18-team table with five points after eight games.

As Bomet continue searching for solutions to their tough start, Ocholla will be encouraged by the latest display.

The win was significant not only as his first since returning but also the first for Ulinzi in many other aspects.

Ocholla’s first match after rejoining the club had ended in a 1-1 draw against record champions Gor Mahia before a narrow 1-0 defeat to Shabana.

Wednesday’s result therefore ended the club’s seven-game winless run and a five-match streak without a clean sheet.

After a 13-year playing career, Ocholla retired in 2017 and transitioned into coaching.

He briefly served as Ulinzi’s head coach in 2021, guiding them to a memorable win over Vihiga Bullets.

More recently, he handled Ulinzi Starlets in the FKF Women Premier League between September and December 2024.

During his playing years, he captained the soldiers to the 2010 Kenyan Premier League title and the KPL Top 8 Cup in 2011, earning a reputation as one of the most disciplined and committed players in the club’s history.
