
Five European clubs jostle for Okumu's signature

Scottish giants Celtic have now entered the race to sign Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu
Kenyan international Joseph Okumu is fast becoming hot property in Europe with Rangers, Celtic, Gent, Stade de Reims and Lorient reported to have tabled an offer of close to Ksh.400M to his club IF Elfsborg to acquire the services of the former Chemelil Sugar FC defender.
According to reports in Sweden, French sides Stade de Reims and Lorient are currently leading the race to land the signature of the towering centre back.
The 24-year-old has been incessantly linked with a move to Scottish champions Rangers FC as a replacement to Filip Helander who has attracted interest from Premier League outfits Leicester City and Aston Villa.
Swedish news outlet Expressen, reports that Elfsborg wants €4 million (approx Ksh.520 million) for the lanky defender who is likely to switch clubs in the summer transfer window.
Scottish sides Rangers, Celtic and Belgian outfit Gent have currently quoted slightly lower bids than the two French clubs as it is unclear whether they will table fresh bids for Okumu.

The former Chemelil Sugar defender has previously stated his ambitions of taking the next step in his career after growing from strength to strength since his Kakamega High School days.
“The Swedish league is a springboard for all players. If you do it well, hopefully, the right opportunity arises. If the right option emerges, I definitely want to take the next step,"
“It depends on the project. It’s not just about going to a top league or a top team. It’s all about where I can go and develop, where my playing style fits and where I can make an impression,” said Okumu in a past interview.
The Elfsborg defender had an outstanding season for Elfsborg last campaign with his efforts not going unnoticed as he was awarded the Breakthrough player for the 2020 season as he helped the side to a second-place finish.
The former Free State Stars defender is signed up to Elite Project Group Limited agency that has Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jadon Sancho, Arsenal youngsters Bukayo Saka, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Folarin Balogun.
