The Istanbul giant is determined to take the title from rival Galatasaray

Twelve years without a league title. The fans are furious, and returning president Aziz Yıldırım knows he won't remain in office for long unless he brings the championship trophy back to Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. That's why Fenerbahçe have begun spending heavily this June. After appointing Dirk Kuyt as assistant coach to İsmail Kartal and paying 15.5 million euros to sign Vedat Muriqi from Mallorca, the club has now completed a transfer that is set to shake Turkish football. Nathan Ake has officially joined Fenerbahce directly from Manchester City.

It's true that the 31-year-old Dutch international was no longer one of Pep Guardiola's first-choice players last season, but he still accumulated 1,644 minutes across all competitions, featuring both as a centre-back and a left-back. He even captained City in the EFL Cup on several occasions. During his six years at the club, Ake made 177 appearances and won 12 major trophies. His trophy haul with Manchester City includes four Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups, the Community Shield, and the UEFA Super Cup. Arguably the best football of his career came between 2022 and 2024, when City completed their historic treble before adding three more trophies, becoming the first English club to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup within the same calendar year. Even better news for Fenerbahçe supporters is that the club did not overpay. According to reports, the transfer fee will amount to around 10 million euros, including bonuses.

Under normal circumstances, this would already be considered the biggest signing in Turkish football. However, Besiktas have reportedly already agreed a 20 million deal with Arsenal for Leandro Trossard, who is expected to earn an astonishing nine million euros per season, including bonuses, after arriving in Istanbul. Meanwhile, Trabzonspor have already spent 24.42 million euros on new signings, including Ruslan Malinovskyi, Ernest Muci, and Sidney Lopes Cabral. With defending champions Galatasaray yet to make their move in the transfer market, it feels as though this is only the beginning of what could be another blockbuster July in Turkish football.
