False 10: Happy Milner's Day, once known as Valentine's Day

A few days before the formal coronation, this Saturday brings a special reunion at Anfield. One of the club’s best returns home to receive well-earned praise and standing ovations

In 1917, King George V created a special order of chivalry to honour thousands who served in non-combat roles during World War I. This became the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), which now recognises “prominent national or regional achievements”.

James Phillip Milner was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in June 2022 for "services to Association Football and Charity". This was the last time the late Queen Elizabeth II gave out these honours before she passed away a few months later.

Milner has always supported charity without seeking attention, but his impact on football is obvious. He’s known for his commitment, hard work, and reliability, earning respect on the pitch for nearly 24 years. His journey started even earlier, at the Leeds United academy in 1996.

Milner, who grew up in Yorkshire, made his Premier League debut for his childhood club on November 10, 2002, against West Ham United. At just 16 years and 309 days old, he came on as a late substitute and became one of the youngest players ever in the competition.

After playing for seven clubs over 23 years, James, now 40, has made Premier League history. He is tied with Gareth Barry for the most appearances, with 653 games. Milner, now finishing his career at Brighton, reached this milestone on Wednesday in a 1-0 loss to his former team, Aston Villa. He will break the record with his 654th game next weekend when Brighton faces Brentford.

But before that, the humble knight is about to receive an honour even more meaningful than the MBE medal. For him, this will surely mean the most.

He will play this Saturday night in the FA Cup match at Anfield, where Milner spent the longest and most important part of his career. Greeted by thousands of Liverpool fans, he will likely take a bow. This is where his versatility, longevity, and dedication to the team made a lasting impact.

Milner made 230 appearances for the Reds between 2015 and 2023, winning both Champions League and Premier League titles. This was likely the most enjoyable part of his impressive journey, which began in the days of dial-up Internet and continues into the era of AI.

The numbers tell the story best.

In his Premier League career, Milner has run about 5,414,326 meters, or 3,364 miles - roughly the distance from New York City to London. He’s played alongside 295 teammates and faced 2,396 opponents. Milner has spent 38,293 minutes, or 26.6 days, playing EPL football. And the list goes on.

Putting those impressive numbers aside, here is a simple question: what is James Milner’s position? No one really knows, because he is one of the most versatile Premier League players ever. Central midfielder, winger, holding midfielder, full-back, box-to-box player - you name it, he has played it.

More importantly, he was a fan favorite not only at Liverpool and Leeds but also during his successful time at Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Manchester City. Wherever he played, he was praised for his character, which led to him being named captain. In the later stages of his career, Milner has become like an assistant coach on the pitch.

Finally, the fact that he has received only three red cards over the years shows his great character and discipline. One of those cards gave us a memorable story in January 2019. Then-Liverpool midfielder Milner picked up a second booking against Crystal Palace and was sent off. What made it special was that the referee, Jon Moss, had been Milner's PE teacher at Westbrook Lane Primary School in the early 90s.

That Yorkshire boy has matured, transformed into a proper knight. This night, he’ll definitely become immortal.
