The Netherlands were two up against Montenegro before conceding two in just four minutes. Now, everything is at stake in the ultimate round

In 2010 they were runners-up. Four years later, they clinched a bronze medal. In 2018, on the contrary, failed to qualify for the event. And now, the Netherlands are heading into the ultimate qualifiers round with a pole position but with a bad taste in their mouth.

The penultimate game saw them going two up against Montenegro - thanks to Memphis Depay's brace - before succumbing to a disappointing 2-2 draw.

In the span of just four minutes, the favourites threw away everything and will host Norway in a disturbing do-or-die fixture on Tuesday. The Dutch team are still Group G leaders with 20 points, while Norway and Turkey are tied at second place with 18. The latter will also have to overpower Montenegro if they want to book their spot at the WC, with one eye firmly attached to that Rotterdam tie.

Louis Van Gaal was eager to win at Podgorica and transform that Norway clash into a dead rubber. However, his defence - despite Virgil Van Dijk's presence - conceded two late goals. Vujnovic and Vukovic denied Depay's brace, pouring some more drama into an already heated group.

On the other hand, France were brutal at home against Kazakhstan, 8-0, picking up the Qatar reservation. Mbappe netted incredible four times, Benzema added two, while Rabiot and Griezmann also placed their name on the scoreboard.

France, Germany, Belgium and Denmark are the only European teams that have booked a spot for the competition we are all waiting for.
