Topping the group would help them steer clear of Uganda, increasing their chances of reaching the final and qualifying for next year’s U20 AFCON
Rising Stars will face Sudan today at the KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam, hoping to qualify for the semifinals of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Kenya currently sits second in the group with seven points from three games, while Sudan is close behind in third place with six points.
This encounter offers both teams a chance to secure the last semifinal spot in Group A.
Group leaders Tanzania have already booked their place in the semifinals, having collected nine points from four games.
Despite losing 2-1 to Kenya on the opening day, Tanzania bounced back with a 7-0 win over Djibouti, a 1-0 victory against Sudan, and a 3-0 triumph over Rwanda.
Kenya began their campaign with a strong win over Tanzania, followed by a goalless draw with Rwanda, before thrashing Djibouti 4-0 on Sunday.
Monday’s match offers the Rising Starlets a chance not only to secure a semifinal spot but potentially to top the group. A win against Sudan will see Kenya finish first, while a draw will leave them in second.
However, a loss would knock them out of the competition.
In addition to securing a semifinal berth, Kenya will be keen to avoid facing tournament favourites and group B leaders Uganda, who await the runners-up of Group A.
Topping the group would help them steer clear of Uganda, increasing their chances of reaching the final and qualifying for next year’s U20 AFCON.
Coach Salim Babu will be counting on the performances of standout players like Kevin Wangaya, Andreas Odhiambo, Aldrine Kibet, Hassan Beja, and William Gitamu to overcome a tough Sudanese side.
Aware of the challenge ahead, Babu said, “It’s not going to be easy. Sudan is a strong and tactical team, and we must be at our best to win. But I have full confidence in these players and believe if we stick to our game plan, we will secure a place in the semifinals.”
The match kicks off at 2 PM.
