Kenya's planned friendly match with Burundi has been canceled due to a last-minute request by the Football Kenya Federation to move the match to Indonesia. The Harambee Stars have not played internationally in over a year
The planned friendly matches between Kenya and Burundi will not take place after all, Burundi football federation General Secretary Jeremie Manirakiza, has told Mozzart Sport.
The Harambee Stars were to return to international football with back to back warm-ups against Burundi's Intamba m'Urugamba on March 25th and 28th in Nairobi, but that has since aborted.
Stars are yet to play internationally in over a year following a FIFA ban that has since been lifted.
According to Manirakiza, they had agreed to play Kenya in Nairobi, but a last minute request by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to have the match played in Indonesia made them withdraw.
"FKF asked us to change and play in Indonesia," Manirakiza, who didn't want to divulge much, and was in a hurry to travel to Rwanda for the upcoming FIFA Congress, said.
Asked for comment, FKF Communications Officer, Ken Okaka said that they will give an official statement later today. "We will send out an official communication later today."
According to a reliable source, the upcoming trip to Indonesia would have been an all-expenses-paid affair for the players, with their bonuses taken care of. During their stay in Indonesia, the teams would have also played friendly matches against select local sides.
