Ex-Mathare United forward reveals club's ‘hefty’ allowances

Mathare United players receive a winning allowance of up to Ksh15,000 a week.

Former Mathare United talisman Ronald Okoth laid bare the team’s bonus and allowances as he compared the football sphere between Kenya and Tanzania.

Okoth has amassed a wealth of experience having turned out for a number of Premier League clubs including Western Stima, Gor Mahia, Sofapaka, KCB, Mathare United and Mahakama.

The 32-year-old noted that top Tanzanian teams offer a sign-on fee of Ksh.4 million with a salary of over Ksh.400,000 but pointed that only a few Kenyan clubs offer hefty bonuses.

“Locally Mathare United and Sofapaka are probably the only clubs with some good slices/bonuses that when topped up with your salary on a good day if their sponsorship is flowing you’d be surprised at your monthly payout. I believe Bandari, Tusker and KCB also have some good allowances,”

“At Mathare in 2016, we were the people being paid the best allowances then by local standards every week. A winning allowance of almost 15k per week, a bonus of Ksh 3600 for being fielded in an away match outside Nairobi, Ksh 1800 for scoring/assisting in Nairobi and Ksh 3600 for away.” wrote Okoth.

The forward who hung his boots in 2020 added an additional bonus of Ksh.1000 and Ksh.2000 would be handed to a player for scoring a goal in the first or last 5 mins of either half, Ksh 6000 for the Man of the Match among other packages aside from our salaries.

Speaking to a source at Mathare United privy to the information revealed that the bonuses are still similar compared to the amounts highlighted by Okoth and explained that the players are put on a 'lower' salary to enable them to work to earn more through the bonuses.

Okoth acknowledged that the league is progressing and would one day love to see players being handed mega deals.

“Despite the challenges, our local league is slowly growing & hopefully one day we can make it as lucrative as other elites & pay all our players/managers at the top level decently in order for them to be able to make smart & comfortable future investments. We will get there,” added Okoth.
