Even the pitch invasion at Sierra Leone couldn’t help them against Egypt

Trabzonspor's Trezequet scored a brace for a 2-0 win

Ahead of the second round World Cup qualifying match between Sierra Leone and Egypt, the hosts had two things to look forward too. They avoided defeat against Egypt in their two past meetings back in 2010-11, when they held The Pharaohs to a draw in their first game and went on to win the reverse fixture on their home patch. They also started these qualifications with a draw against Ethiopia (the match was delayed on several occasions due to dense fog), which was a continuation of a mini undefeated series (1-1 draw to Benin and a 2-0 friendly match win over Somalia last month). But that optimism lasted just 18 minutes. And then the Egyptians took over the match and finished it with an easy 2-0 win. The only dangerous thing the hosts were able to do for the whole match was to let some fans on the pitch in the 89th minute. A number of home fans ran onto the ground and apparently aimed Salah, but the serious incident was avoided and the game finished with 10 added minutes.

Former Aston Villa man was the hero of the day this time and scored a brace. Mahmoud Trézéguet opened the game with the first goal in the 18th minute, after an assist from Mostafa Mohamed, and the second one came in the 62nd minute, this time with a help from Mohamed Salah. The Egypt’s attacking trio basically did all the work in today’s game and didn’t allow the hosts and glimmer of hope. On top of that, Sierra Leone decided to complicate things for themselves when Tyrese Fornah got the second yellow card just before halftime. There was no way the hosts would compete with Egypt with ten men on the field, and the game was over when Trezeguet scored the second goal of the match.
