EURO2024Q: Haaland and Odegaard surrender to Spain, Wales push Croatia to the verge of abyss

Spain and Scotland have qualified for the European Championship

Sunday night brought us some super-exciting football in the Euro 2024 qualifiers and a few quite surprising outcomes.

Like the one involving the 2022 World Cup bronze medalist Croatia, who are on the brink of a significant flop following tonight's 2-1 away loss to Wales. After a defeat to Turkey a few days ago, Luka Modric and his team suffered another setback, mainly at the hands of Fulham's striker Harry Wilson. The Welsh scored a brace to kill the Croats, as the two sides are now in joint second place with 15 points, but the Brits are much closer to qualifying for the European Championship thanks to a better head-to-head result.

Even in the case of a third-place finish, Croatia still have a chance for salvation through the UEFA Nations League.

Unlike them, Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard's Norway probably won't be given another opportunity to reach the continental showpiece next year in Germany.

Their two mesmerizing Premier League stars are inches away from missing the third major tournament in a row after losing at home to Spain 1-0 on Sunday night. The Spaniards not only managed to stop Odegaard and Haaland but also netted on the other end, through Gavi, to show who's boss. La Roja were in control of the game from the start, and if it weren't for Alvaro Morata's selfishness, they'd have been in front even before the interval. The ball already going in from Norway defender Morata chipped over the goal-line, making the play offside and thus denying Spain's lead.

However, not even Morata could prevent his squad from scoring the winner in the second half, although the Atletico Madrid striker this time acted as a genuine Norway defender, accidentally clearing his teammate's effort inside the six-yard box.

Thankfully for Morata, he was not offside at that moment, and Barcelona's prodigy, Gavi, made the most of it when the ball finally reached him around the penalty spot.

On the other hand, Haaland was nowhere near the expected action around Spain's goal, with Odegaard also struggling to make his presence felt.

Scott McTominay's qualified along with Spain, while the Scandinavians are left disappointed once again.
