The legendary striker garnered 43 votes, eight more than his closest challenger.

Former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward Samuel Eto'o has been elected as the new president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) by a landslide victory.

The 40-year-old was the overwhelming favourite heading into the polls held on Saturday 11 December as he floored the incumbent Seidou Mbombo Njoya by a sizable margin.

His victory comes barely a month to the 2021 Cameroon African Cup of Nations slated for Sunday 9 January 2022 to Sunday 6 February.

Eto'o gained a lot of support especially from former players and other football stars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roger Milla, Rigobert Song among others.

The four-time African Player of the Year defeated outgoing president Seydou Mbombo Njoya by 43 votes to 31 with the other candidates receiving no votes.

A total of 76 delegates will be invited to vote: 60 of them came from the ten regional leagues, 10 came from professional clubs (six from Elite 1 and four from Elite 2) and the last 6 represent the trades (referees, coaches and players).

Before the polls, Eto’o had attempted to obtain the suspension of Mbombo Njoya, whom he had supported at the time of his election in 2018, for “corruption, manipulation of matches and embezzlement”.
