England to co-host EURO 2028

The decision has been made: UEFA announced at noon that the 2028 European Championship will be held in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. Nyon congratulated the hosts and announced that the matches will be played in nine cities: Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, London (in two stadiums), Manchester and Newcastle.

Let us remind you that Spain and Portugal showed interest in organizing this tournament, followed by Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, or Romania, Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia. None of these three remaining candidacies were officially submitted, so the British and Irish practically had no competition. And in 2028, 24 of the best European teams will participate in the final tournament. The competition will start in mid-June and will last for a month…

England, which hosted the women's Euro last year, last organized a major men's tournament in 1996, when the European Championship involved just 16 teams. It also hosted the final of the 24-team Euro 2020, delayed by a year due to the pandemic and held in venues across Europe, at Wembley. Between them, England and Scotland hosted 12 games during that tournament.

Today it was also announced that Italy and Turkey will host the 2032 European Championship. Originally, UEFA received three bids for this tournament: Italy, Turkey and Russia. Since the latter was immediately rejected for well-known reasons, Turkey and Italy remained in the competition, and later the two countries decided to send a joint bid. So there was no real competition in this case either. The Italians and Turks presented 20 potential stadiums where the game should be played, of which 10 will be selected by 2026, five in each country. The host of the final will be determined later. As a reminder, EURO 2024 will be held in Germany.
