Rooney Onyango has been playing as an offensive winger at Harambee Stars and not his usual right-back position
In an exclusive interview with People Daily, Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat sheds light on the unconventional but impressive performance of Kenyan football sensation Rooney, who has been making waves in a position different from his usual role.
Firat chuckled as he recalled a football expert's assessment that Rooney, typically a right back at Gor Mahia, was arguably the player of the match against Seychelles recently despite playing out of position. "It made me laugh," Firat admitted. "Does it mean he is playing as a right winger in the national team better than at Gor Mahia where he plays as a right back?"
Firat was quick to respond, emphasizing Rooney's offensive qualities and expressing that he is better suited to an attacking role. "He is definitely playing better because he is not playing in the Right Back position," Firat explained. "Rooney has a lot of offensive qualities which he has started learning quickly in the national team. He is clearly an offensive player, and that’s the position I will be using him in."
The coach went on to use a vivid analogy, comparing using Rooney as a right back to "driving a Porsche with a hand brake." According to Firat, Rooney's potential shines when he can fully unleash his offensive skills on the pitch.
Despite the unorthodox move, Firat expressed confidence in Rooney's ability to adapt and learn. "He has a lot to learn, and he will swiftly make his way to Europe," Firat predicted, hinting at the player's bright future and potential for international success.
Firat backed his assertion with statistical evidence, highlighting Rooney's impressive contributions on the field. "If you look at his statistics, the proof is there because he not only creates assists but also scores goals. He has won more offensive challenges than defensive challenges. No one can dispute this."
