Sony Sugar has finally been renamed Gusii FC and relocated to Kisii from Awendo.

Former Kenyan Premier League champions Sony Sugar have finally changed the name to Gusii FC after being acquired by former Shabana Chairman, Paul Mayieko, the team has also relocated to Kisii town from Awendo.

The acquisition of the 2006 league champions marks the end of what has been a turbulent few years for the club. Financial challenges saw the team issue three walkovers in 2019 before they got relegated to the second tier.

Last year there were rumours that the team could be disbanded as the Sugar company was not in a position to support it. It however remained afloat until its acquisition by Mr Mayieko, a medical practitioner by profession.

“We are happy that the acquisition process has finally been completed. It’s been a long journey but finally, we have our name, Gusii FC. It’s even easy to negotiate will potential sponsors because we now have an identity,” assistant coach Andrew Ongwae, a former Gor Mahia player told Mozzart Sport.

The club has also appointed a new coach, Ongwae has been serving as interim coach since February when head coach Juma Abdalla left for Western Stima. Former Sindo United coach Kassim Junior Otieno is the new head club head coach.

“Kassim is here with us. He is a very knowledgeable coach and I believe that together we will take the team forward. We are ambitious with big targets that we intend to achieve,” he added.

The change of name and ownership brings an end to a team that was known for producing good young talents. Some of the players that came through Sony ranks include; Joackins Atudo, Noah Abich, Ali Hassan, Kevin Oluoch, Tobias Otieno, Fredrick Onyango, and Enock Agwanda among others.
