Kenya's quest to successfully stage the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 gathered steam on Tuesday, with Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba chairing a meeting of the Technical Preparatory Committee.
The committee tasked with "ensuring adequate preparation for the event", reviewed the progress made so far and also debated the blueprint currently being implemented.
"The committee deliberated on strategic plans and reviewed the progress so far towards ensuring that every piece was set in place as the nation embarked on a journey of getting itself ready through infrastructure development and other key requirements for a successful hosting."
Also in attendance was the State Department for Sports permanent secretary, Eng. Peter Tum.
Kenya, alongside neighbors Uganda and Tanzania, was granted the hosting rights for the 2027 showpiece under the banner EA Pamoja.
Three stadiums, including Kasarani and Nyayo in Nairobi and Kipchoge Keino in Eldoret, have been earmarked to host the games on the Kenyan side.
The government has already announced major renovations of the facilities to meet the required standards; nonetheless, some of the stadiums are still in use.
Kasarani, for example, hosted a church crusade over the weekend, while Nyayo is still staging FKF Premier League games.
A number of training grounds will also be built or renovated to ensure a successful tournament.
Kenya has also been given the greenlight to host the second-tier African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 edition, according to a recent Cabinet dispatch.
CAF, the Confederation of African Football, is yet to confirm the same.
The country failed to host the championship played strictly by home-based players in 2018 for lack of preparedness with Morocco grabbing the opportunity.
