PSV are reportedly interested in Mwene who is leaving Mainz on the Bosman rule.

Barely two days after his club, FSV Mainz 05 announced that he will be leaving the club, Kenyan defender Philipp Mwene is reportedly in talks with Dutch giants, PSV Eindhoven over a switch to the club.

On Thursday, Mainz announced that Mwene had turned down a contract offer from the club despite initially agreeing to renew his contract with the club he joined in 2018. The club went on to wish him well in his future endeavours.

Phillipp Mwene has not extended his expiring contract at Mainz 05 and will leave the Zerofivers. The 27-year-old Austrian, who arrived at Bruchweg from 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2018, has played 30 competitive games for Mainz in three years,” the club announced.

"We had already reached an agreement with Phillipp, however, he then decided otherwise before signing the contract. We regret this very much, but wish Phillipp all the best for his future and thank him for his commitment to Mainz 05," said 05 sporting director Martin Schmidt added.

German outlet The Kicker now reports that the player is a target of PSV who are keen on strengthening their right-back position. The publication adds that the fact that he is available on the Bosman will fasten negotiations between the two parties.

Mwene, born of a Kenyan father and Austrian mother was eligible to play for Harambee Stars as he holds dual citizenship. He however opted to play for his motherland and he was recently named in Austria’s preliminary Euro 2020 squad and he will be hoping to make it to the final squad. He has featured for Austria U19 and U21 teams.
