Portuguese coach will leave the French giants after a breakdown in communication between him and the board regarding transfer dealings
Andre Villas-Boas has had enough! Speaking to the press ahead of Marseille’s match against FC Lens, the Portuguese coach has revealed that he’d handed in his resignation. He said that he could no longer get along with the club’s operating in terms of sporting strategy. The club is yet to respond.
The main problem for the coach is the incoming transfer of Celtic’s former French U-21 international Olivier Ntcham, who was brought to Stade Velodrome without Villas-Boas ever agreeing to the deal.
"The player was signed even though I specifically said no. I didn’t want us to sign him, but it was only this morning that I learned the transfer was completed. I cannot accept that. I tendered my resignation right away and I’m waiting for the club to give me a response. I’ve got a loving relationship with France and Marseille and I’m sorry it’s come to this."
This disagreement over transfer policy came during Marseille’s poor patch of form, but the former Chelsea manager insists that poor results nor last week’s fans’ protest is the reason he’s leaving.
"It’s not the way to do business. It goes against my professionalism and it goes against my principles. It’s not the first time a club has signed a player without head coach’s knowledge, but it’s not the way I can work. I’ve got a lot of respect for the club owner Frank McCourt and I don’t want his money. I don’t need to be paid off. I just want to leave."
Villas-Boas shocked the French public in deciding to leave, but he says that he will lead the team in tomorrow’s match.
"I’ve prepared for the Lens game and I will honour my team. If the club needs more time to react – it’s no problem."
