Life can sometimes be very cruel, especially if your name is Zoran Mamic. The former Dinamo Zagreb coach, who resigned a month ago after he was sentenced to four years and eight months of prison, is facing a truly frustrating days. Not only he had to give up his role and the dream with Dinamo's side that reached the UEFA Europa League 1/4 finals after shocking two-leg victory over Tottenham, but will be forced to watch his club from state penitentiary.
According to various sources, Mamic is due to report to jail in two weeks' time, on 26 April. Meanwhile, Dinamo will play the return leg on Thursday, April 15 in Villareal, after losing at home 1-0 due to penalty. If the Croatian champions add another wonder-result to their showcase, the semi-finals are scheduled for 29 April, so Mamic could maybe grab a few moments of the game on TV if the prison guards allow him to do that.
Mamic, 49, was found guilty of corruption and involvement in transfer fee scams with his older brother Zdravko, who was the mastermind of the entire operation and therefore sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison. Among the suspicious transfers, there is also today's Real Madrid ace Luka Modric, who went from Dinamo to Tottenham in 2008.
