Fabregas played Diao even though he knew that the Senegalese is going to AFCON

Now this is turning into a full-scale ‘war‘ between Senegal and Cesc Fabregas. Just days after the Como boss revealed his ‘unpleasant‘ conversation with Pape Thiaw, he fielded Assane Diao against Roma, the payer got injured and might miss AFCON! What is even worse for the Spaniard is the fact that he criticized Thiaw for calling Diao for AFCON even thou the player was injured and wasn‘t in full fitness only to put him in the starting 11 against Roma the next day. The played had to come out after only 37 minutes. After missing several months of action earlier this year due to a fractured metatarsal, and a hamstring injury that ruled him out for two league matches in November he picked another muscular injury, which makes his participation at the Africa Cup of Nations into major doubt.

Fabregas also gave a selfish answer why he played Diao anyway.

He probably shouldn’t have played today either, but I picked him because he’s leaving tomorrow and I won’t have him for five weeks, so we pay his wages, at least let him play for us a bit. He’s been out for eight months and he’s a very strong player for us. At least let’s try to take a risk“ he said last night after the game.

That explanation angered Senegal fans even more, and they wasted no time on social media, sending abuse to the Spaniard, his wife and family. Diao is now in danger of missing the entire tournament and this is the second problem for Thiaw, who already lost Ilay Camara, the RSC Anderlecht right-back due to injury.

But Fabregas not only played half-prepared Diao, but also further widened his freud with Thiaw by explaining why his conversation with the Lions of Teranga boss was ‘unpleasant‘.

It’s that he said if Diao doesn’t come with us, he won’t go to the World Cup. That’s not fair, it plays on the fears of the player, he is 20 years old and has a whole career ahead of him. I don’t agree with this, it was not fair and not right” concluded Fabregas.
