James Maddison will have to undergo surgery following an ACL injury he picked up during a pre-season game against Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison is expected to miss almost the entire next season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The ACL he ruptured in a recent pre-season friendly against Newcastle United requires surgery and a long recovery.

Maddison went down off the ball around the 10th-minute mark after coming on as a substitute in Spurs' 1-1 friendly draw with Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday.

In a statement, Spurs confirmed: "We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

"The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul.

"His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.

"Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way."

Spurs boss Thomas Frank said the initial impression was that Maddison suffered an injury to the "same knee he had the previous injury in and that it looked like a bad injury".

Europa League winners Spurs face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 13. Three days later, the north Londoners start their new Premier League season against Burnley.
