Demba Ba, the author of the infamous Liverpool title trauma, announces his retirement

There are quite a few players in the game's history recognized for a single goal, save or move, despite the fact they achieved and have done much more in their careers. They are, undeservedly, classified as those 'one-hit wonders' and will stay like that in the collective memory forever.

One of them is, definitely, Demba Ba, the 36-year-old Senegalese striker who has announced his retirement. Although his CV is packed with some quality displays around the globe, Ba will go down in history as the scorer of THAT goal - a winner against Liverpool at Enfield that buried Reds' title hopes on the very brink of glory.

Then-Chelsea striker sized an opportunity that came around after Steven Gerard's tragic mistake, stormed into the box and placed it in the back of the net in front of thousands of excruciated Scousers in the stands. It was Ba's seventh and the last goal for Chelsea he scored in a sole season spent with Stamford Bridge outfit.

His other spells included West Ham, Newcastle, and more than a few seasons in China and Turkey, where he became a household name.

Last December, his name was in the spotlight after he raised his voice against racism when the fourth Romanian official made some shameful comments during the UCL tie between Ba's Istanbul Bashaksehir and PSG.

On 19 June 2021, Ba signed a one-year contract for Swiss Super League club FC Lugano on a free transfer. However, less than three months later, on 13 September, Ba announced he had retired from professional footbal.
