De Zerbi about his players: ‘It‘s a strange team‘

The Italian talked about the inconsistencies which his team is producting this season

It came and it went well. After the shameful and unexpected exit from the Champions League (they were defeated 3-0 by Brugge), Marseille fans lost their patience. They held a meeting with the players and club‘s executives one day before the cup game with Rennes and told them that the defeat is not an option. The players and coach Roberto De Zerbi listened and won 3-0, so the first wave of unhappiness is over. It was reported by RMC Sports that even the Italian admitted he could not fully explain the side’s inconsistency this season.

After telling fans the truth, De Zerbi admitted something similar after the Rennes game.

"It's a strange team, one that's hard to understand. When you play with an extra defender, you concede three goals. And when you play with four attackers, you don't concede a single shot…" said the Marseille boss about his own players. He also praised the fans and their views.

"The fans are more intelligent and knowledgeable than we think. They almost always tell the truth. They were disappointed in Bruges and they're right, it's a match we can be ashamed of. We have a team that gives you the impression of being very strong, so it's normal that there are expectations. Sometimes they are respected, sometimes not" he said.

‘Disappointed‘ is maybe too light description as the fans displayed numerous banners during the Rennes match and they were brutal. The one on the North stand read: "28/01/2026: we will not forget…" (the date when they lost 3-0 to Brugge), while the South Stand displayed: "Lack of stability, ambition, and guts. All responsible! Shame on you!". When the game started, the bigger banner was put out: "Our passion knows no bounds...our patience has run out. To lessen the shame, our last chance is the Coupe de France!".
