David Owino is seeking to help Harambee Stars qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

KCB wing-back David Owino is drawing inspiration from the Harambee Stars class of 2019 that qualified for the African Cup of Nations in a bid to repeat the heroics for the second consecutive tourney.

Kenya however faces an uphill battle to qualify and need a miracle to cut the five-point gap between them and joint Group G joint leaders Egypt and Comoros after amassing a paltry three points from the opening four games.

Owino acknowledged the difficult task at hand but noted that the squad is looking to repeat the feat of 1988 to 1992 when Harambee Stars qualified for three consecutive AFCON tournaments.

“We have two difficult games and our ambition is to win, we have the hunger to win the games and go to the AFCON just like the players who went there in 2019, we need to go back there,” said Owino.

Harambee Stars held a training session for local-based players on Thursday as preparations for the two crucial qualifiers hit top gear with less than two weeks left determine the fate of Harambee Stars in the continental showpiece.

Gor Mahia midfielder John Macharia on his part highlighted the importance of the two friendlies against Tanzania and South Sudan which will augment the confidence of the players.

“Those three friendlies are good because they will give us the morale and confidence to approach the games that are ahead of us.”

"The more you play the more you grow in confidence to approach games so again these friendlies are important to boost the confidence of the players,” noted Macharia.

Kenya face South Sudan on Saturday 13 March before playing Tanzania on Monday 15 and Thursday 18.
