Chelsea's misfit is close to becoming Luke Shaw's stand-in

Manchester United is considering the option of signing a left-back during the final week of the transfer window to provide cover for the injured Luke Shaw. The potential targets on manager Erik Ten Hag's list include Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, Tottenham's Sergio Reguilon, and Barcelona's Marcos Alonso.

The need for cover arises from the muscle injury that Shaw sustained during a match against Tottenham last week, which might keep him sidelined until November, longer than initially anticipated. The intention is to secure temporary deals for Cucurella, Reguilon or Alonso, all of whom are considered fringe players at their current clubs. Another left-back option for Manchester United, Tyrell Malacia, is also sidelined due to injury.

In a recent match against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag deployed Diogo Dalot as a left-back, but he is seeking to have a dedicated specialist for that position. Dalot's primary position is right-back so it's not a viable option in the long run.

The defender hasn't been able to joust the starting shirt from Ben Chilwell or Levi Colwill, who have both started on the left under the new head coach. With his lack of involvement, it seemed as though a move away could be on the cards if a suitable offer arrived from elsewhere.

The interest from Manchester United so late in the window has added a new dimension to the story, given their injury concerns. An opening proposal has been made by the Red Devils for a season-long loan with the parameters around that being discussed. It remains to be seen whether the move will end up favourable for all parties, with just a few days remaining in this transfer window.

Just one season after the left-back completed a high-profile $75 million transfer from Brighton, the Spaniard is viewed as a highly dispensable asset for the London club. During his time with Brighton, Cucurella received numerous accolades, including being named the club's player of the season, raising optimism for his future with the Blues. However, his popularity at Stamford Bridge did not quite reach the same heights.

Cucurella became closely associated with manager Graham Potter, who arrived at the club shortly after his transfer. As the 25-year-old's performances saw a decline, the results of the team in west London also suffered, leading to increased tensions. However, Manchester United don't have time to think of more suitable solutions.
