Cucurella on Premier League refs: 'They are going after me'

"It's normal, we won. I assisted Oyarzabal's goal, I'm playing at their home. The Englishmen are hurt"

Chelsea's Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana were the first Premier League players to earn a yellow-card suspension, given in case of five racked up bookings. The duo served their suspensions yesterday against Liverpool and their replacements, Reece James and Tosin Adarabioyo, obviously failed to fill their shoes as the Blues suffered a loss after being undefeated for seven games.

Speaking to the Spanish radio station COPE, Cucurella claimed that he knew why he had accumulated five yellow cards - because the refs were after him?!

"Well, I've already been suspended for five yellow cards and I've committed few fouls; they're going after me a bit. They jump on me quickly, especially when we play away," the defender asserted.

However, the Spaniard also revealed the reason behind his suspicions - the EURO 2024 final in which La Roja beat England 2-1 thanks to Mikel Oyarzabal's late winner, assisted by the Blues' player.

"It's normal, we won. I assisted Oyarzabal's goal, I'm playing at their home. The Englishmen are hurt," Cucurella said.

Next Sunday, Chelsea await Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, and the 26-year-old left-back will undoubtedly be involved. It only remains to see how the fans react to his latest statements, whether the English crowd will overlook his allegations, and how it will affect the referees' attitude towards him.
